Build of the Month Count Thane Presents:
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809, the son of David and Elizabeth Poe. They had three children, Henry, Edgar and Rosalie. Edgar's mother died when he was just 2 years old. Prior to this, she had separated from her husband, and after she died, the family was split up, with Edgar being adopted by Mr and Mrs John Allan. John Allan was a successful merchant, and Edgar grew up in good surroundings and went to good schools. As a child he studied in England and America. He started at the University of Virginia in 1826, but due to John Allan's parsimony, Edgar did not have enough to live on, so with no money, no job skills, and having been shunned by his stepfather, he went to Boston and joined the army, where he attained the rank of Sergeant Major. After Mrs Allen died, John tried to renew the friendship with Edgar and signed his application to West Point. While waiting to enter, Edgar lived with his grandmother and aunt, along with his brother, Henry and a young cousin, Virginia. In 1830 Edgar started at West Point as a cadet, but didn't stay long because John Allan again didn't support him financially. It is thought that Edgar purposely broke the rules and ignored his duties so he was dismissed. In 1831 Edgar went to New York where he had some of his poetry published, but his stories were all rejected by a number of magazines. He had no friends, no job, and was in financial trouble. He begged John Allen for help, but none was forthcoming. Allen died in 1834 and left Edgar out of his will. In 1835, Edgar finally got a job as an editor of a newspaper in Richmond because of a contest he won with his story "The Manuscript Found in a Bottle". He was successful in increasing the circulation to 3500 copies. But Edgar missed his grandmother and his cousin Virginia, and brought them to Richmond to live with him. He married his cousin Virginia. But he left the paper due to a poor salary. He moved to Philadelphia in 1838 where he wrote "Ligeia" and "The Haunted Palace". His first volume of short stories, "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque" was published in 1839. Poe received the copyright and 20 copies of the book, but no money. In 1840 he became an editor for Graham's Magazine. During that time he published his first detective story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue". Again, the circulation of the magazine grew from 5000 to 35,000 copies. In 1845 he became an editor at the Broadway Journal, but it ran out of money once again he was out of a job. During this time his wife Virginia became ill and died. Edgar collapsed from stress and grief, but returned to health later in that year. On September 27, 1849, Poe left Richmond for New York. He went to Philadelphia and stayed with a friend. On September 30, he meant to go to New York but supposedly took the wrong train to Baltimore. On October 3, Poe was found at Gunner's Hall, a public house in Baltimore, and was taken to the hospital. He lapsed in and out of consciousness but was never able to explain exactly what happened to him. He died in the hospital on Sunday, October 7, 1849. The mystery surrounding Poe's death has led to many myths and urban legends. |
![]() That sound over and over and over - tap tap tap crunch!! Crunch! And again. This had to stop. Fuzzy pulled the pillow tighter around his head, but it was no good; he could not block out the sound. Finally he sat bolt upright and launched his pillow across the room. In a gruff he pulled himself from his warm bed and grabbed his robe stomped out into the living room, eyes blurry and worked into a full on dander. He nearly shouted: "What is that noise." In a split second he became shamefully aware he was not in his own house but at the Stout Foot Inn. And now here he was, standing right in the public area in full view of a group of very shocked and very large wild bears, one of whom it would seem was the source of the sound as he had a large pile of broken walnut shells in front of him and was frozen is mid crunch. All parties involved stood motionless for a few more seconds before the scene was jolted forward by the laugh of Rufus who was just entering the room carrying a large tray of honey beer. Now, read on... Aunt Trudy Hears...Aunt Trudy provides news and, well, gossip from Yellow citizens. If you have something you want in the Gazette, just contact yellowgazette@cox.net Dear readers Aunt Trudy has news for you... Steam City is still growing and developing. There is a newly built Welcome Center, and a new modernised Zeppelin tower. Some of the residents of the city are still working on their blocks as well. If you want a block there, contact Ozman or Apooka who will be happy to arrange one for you. The coordinates for Steam City are: 1831.03s 1690.07e 0.11a 90. The Yellow Builders Guild is developing nicely. I have inside information that the first Golden Bear Award will be awarded soon and the recipient will feature in the next issue of the YG. Ms T is sending an invitation to the Grand opening of Imagine Park in October. She would like all the Yellow builders to come sign the Fence for Peace. The coordinates are: Yellow 676.341S 1710.389E -0.02a 202.5 Our condolences to the family and friends of Impy o who has passed on recently. More news about Rufus and Chloe. I've heard that they recently received a large package which apparently makes them the new owners of Burrfoot cove, and the Burrfoot estate and all the landholding in Yellow held by the Burrfoot family. I've always wondered about the Burrfoot clan; they just disappeared under mysterious and suspicious circumstances, but now this young couple has suddenly inherited all this? I ask you, something doesn't smell right here, and I will get to the bottom of this. Mind you, they're a lovely pair, but they are reaching just a bit above their station. Who, I wonder has bequeathed them this amazing legacy? Trudy will tell all as soon as she gets the evidence! The charity ball for Bears who can't yodel has been deferred until we can find one who can't... There is a new sign seen somewhere in Yellow: "In this world, citizens have the right to arm bears." Just in: Theo Fuzzybottom, my extinguished -- sorry -- my distinguished colleague, has not yet found his airship that was stolen by that leprechaun. Be on the lookout for this thief! See you soon sweeties
